For Teachers

The Museum has over 30,000 artifacts in their collections, ranging from fossils to oriental textiles.  Imagination is the only thing limiting how this rich resource can help educators in the classroom. A tour of the exhibits can stimulate creative writing, scientific thinking, historic research and countless other areas of learning. Learning is enhanced through seeing an object in three-dimension.

Science

“Beaks and Feet”

Drawing from museum collections, a team of science teachers from Greenwood County School Districts 50, 51 and 52 developed lesson plans and assembled Teaching Kits addressing state mandated standards for 3rd and 4th grades.  These kits are available for classroom use.

Sponsored by the Education Enrichment Foundation, and Members of The Museum’s Partnership Program.  Advisory support from Rosemary Wicker of the Upstate Math and Science Hub.

History

Colonial South Carolina

In development, a team of social studies teachers are focusing on the upstate of South Carolina during the period of early colonization.

Sponsored by The Next Generation of The Self Family Foundation and The Museum.  Advisory support from Leslie Sanford of Greenwood County School District 50 and the Education Enrichment Foundation.

Internships

Internships are available.  During the past fifteen years, The Museum has worked closely with professors and students of Lander University and look forward to expanded opportunities with other institutions.

Tours

General tours are available with or without a guide (Docent).  Arrangements must be made in advance for groups of 10 or more.  If a guide is required, please schedule your group at least two weeks prior to the visit.

Tours focused on specific areas or subject matter can be arranged.  Please indicate special interests when scheduling your group.

Availability of Docents (tour guides)

Museum Docents volunteer their time; therefore it is possible a member of museum staff will conduct your tour when a volunteer is not available.  Please be assured every effort will be made to see that your group has a meaningful experience while at The Museum.

Admission Charge for School/Scout Groups

$1 for students; drivers and chaperones are not charged an admission fee when visiting The Museum with their group.  In the event of a financial hardship, an educational scholarship fund is available to cover admission fees.  Funding for the educational scholarship program has been made possible through annual contributions from Greenwood Kiwanis Clubs.

Tours During Non-Public Hours

The Museum is open to the public Wednesday through Friday, 10am – 5pm and Saturday 2 – 5pm.  If you are unable to schedule a tour during these hours, please ask to speak with a member of the staff.  If possible, special arrangements will be made to accommodate your needs.

Handicap Accessibility

An elevator is available for individuals requiring assistance.  Bathroom facilities on the main floor are handicap accessible.

Museum Store

In the interest of fairness to individual students, access to the Museum Store is usually restricted when school groups tour The Museum.  Please let Museum Staff know in advance if you have made arrangements with your students and their parents for them to visit the Museum Store.  Prices for items range from 25˘ to over $50 (sales tax is applicable and included in marked price).
