Museum has Wright StuffThe Museum in Greenwood announces the opening of it’s newest exhibit “A Home for Everyone: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian Designs.” The exhibit is scheduled to run through October 1. The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright is perhaps best known for his “Prairie Style” houses. Their art glass window and finely crafted mission inspired furnishings embodied the arts and crafts movement at the turn of the century. While many would have become complacent with their success, Wright viewed this highly touted period in his career was merely a stepping stone to his ultimate vision. His goal: to create a completely new, unique and affordable American architecture that he called USonian. Wright’s Usonian design was a Utopian vision for both housing and urban planning—a social experiment that that had its roots in the shift from rigid Victorian formality to a more open and accessible lifestyle. His Usonian designs decompartmentalized the American home, made the hearth the focal point family life, and sought to bring the housewife to the forefront of household activity rather than relegating her to a kitchen hidden away at the rear of the house. The exhibit explores the development, evolution, and impacts of Wright’s Usonian Ideals through the detailed study of two houses built a decade apart. According to The Museum’s Executive Director Matt Edwards, “This exhibit is the culmination of over a year of planning and work with the two featured houses, The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the City of Florence Alabama Museums, the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.” This exhibition is part of The Museum’s “Destination Exhibit” program that was launched with last summer’s highly successful Ansel Adams photography show. The program was designed to help extend Greenwood’s tourist season into the early fall and more importantly to attract visitors to Greenwood from the major metro areas within a two hour commute. According to Kelly McWhorter, Executive Director of the Greenwood Regional Tourism and Visitor’s Bureau, “The destination exhibit is a great new concept, that encompasses a regional perspective that’s we at the TVB are trying to foster and encourage.” Edwards adds, “last year’s program was tremendously successful in accomplishing the stated goals and we have high hopes for this year’s program as well.” During the coming months, The Museum will be hosting several programs and activities centered around the exhibit as well as developing and distributing a teachers reference packet to the area schools in the fall. This exhibit is funded in part by the Greenwood City and County Accomodations Tax fund. Additional funding was provided by the Arts Council of Greenwood County and the SC Arts Commission which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the John and Susan Bennet Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community Foundation of SC, As well as DSP Architects, and Furman Architects of Greenwood, SC.
